Finding Breath | Yoga In The Wild

Finding Breath | Yoga In The Wild

We caught up with good friends The Yoga body (@theyogabody) about their recent team escape and what inspires them to greet the sun.

“Early mornings feel normal for us now, the calm that can be found in the wild at sunrise is unique and inspiring. We practiced in quiet as the sun came up and and it felt right. It isn’t always easy to roll out of the cosy van, but the payoff is always worth it.”

We all arrived at Bolberry Down at 5am, a thick sea mist had crept over from offshore and we couldn’t see further than 50 metres ahead of us. Yoga in the mist? We decided to wait it out for a short while, the forecasts promised rays and we could feel it coming.

Moments like these deserve a brew, we forage some fuel for the stove and line the mugs up.

Nestled down, brew in hand, we wait for the rising sun to burn away the mist. Christie, who can always be found with a camera in her hand, wanders around us capturing the moment and throws glances over the horizon. It’s early and we’re tired, we talk about the days to come and stare out into the fog, imagining what views are lighting up behind it.

Early mornings feel normal for us now, the calm that can be found in the wild at sunrise is unique and inspiring. The haze fizzles out, becoming thinner and revealing a warm glow from above. We practice in quiet as the sun comes up and feel aligned with the day. It isn’t always easy to roll out of the cosy van, but the payoff is always worth it.

We take a walk along the rugged cliff path and find various breaks in the clouds where the sun's rays shine through. We go through some poses together on a soft grassy headland, it’s bright and warming in these spots.

The rolling hills on one side provide a humbling backdrop for us, whilst ocean on the other side becomes clearer and bluer as the sea mist burns away into almost nothing.

We walked, we chatted, we made future plans and fussed over our resident yoga dog, Pippi. Time flowed past quickly, content to be in each others company and in these beautiful surroundings.

Someone casually mentioned breakfast, and it was at this stage we realised that hunger had crept up on us. Alby and Laxmi rustled up some campfire coffee and slow cooked porridge. We sat around in camping chairs and and basked in the morning sun.

We spent the day roaming our surroundings along cliff tops and down windy pathways. We found hushed coves, warm beaches and moments of escape. Days like this flow past easily, empty of plans and direction but full all the same.

We gathered together in the evening on the beach, making the most of the golden light and taking the opportunity for some photography. The mood was summery, playful and bright. We went through some flows and got a campfire going for some warming supper.

Yoga on the beach, with the sun rising or setting is something we’ve grown to be passionate about. The sand provides a playground for tackling tricky postures and the calming sounds of the ocean brings us focus and presence. Who knows what tomorrow will bring, but finding breath in the wild is a day well spent.
